“You’d put 4 grandfather [stones] in [the fire], and he had a bucket of water, and in the water, he had a blend of herbs – like cedar, sweet grass - that he put into the water. And then he had branches tied together, he would dip it in the bucket, and splash it on the stones and it would create steam. The grandfathers would come in [to the sweat lodge] a few at a time, and depending how many came in at once, it would dictate how hot it got.
